Hard Truths For Today's Church: 1 Corinthians
A Church struggling and conflicted over who is its leader, sex scandals, lawsuits, conflict, abuse of power between the rich and poor, caught up with the secular culture and context around them. There is a sense of competitiveness, self-achievement, self-promotion, self-sufficiency, self-celebration, self-entitlement and the over-emphasis of the more "showy" gifts over the basic gifts of love for others. This is a church who has forgotten who they are, and more importantly - who's they are. Don't worry - I'm not talking about Hills Baptist... But I could be, couldn't I? This is the church in Corinth in the first century, to which Paul wrote the Letter of 1 Corinthians. It does sound familiar, doesn't it. Over the next few weeks we will be working through this letter, covering chapter after chapter, hearing the hard truths Paul has to say to the Corinthian church. These hard truths - are truths we need to hear. So we will hear about what Paul has to say about wisdom, leadership, sexuality, relationships, conflict, about the Gospel, And through this we will discover our identity as the church - the temple of the Holy Spirit - God's very presence, and the Children of the one True God. We are His church, and he has a message for us today, so come along, be challenged, be transformed to live out as God's church today.
